What is Neuro Physiotherapy?
Neuro Physiotherapy is a specialist form of physiotherapy aimed at improving the movement and function of those affected by a neurological condition or injury. Neurological physiotherapy involves the accurate assessment, treatment, management and rehabilitation of these issues.
Who will benefit from Neuro Physiotherapy?
Anyone who experiences difficulties with their physical function, mobility or their ability to carry out normal activities of daily life as a result of a neurological event or neurological condition. These can be the result of traumatic injuries to the head, brain or spinal cord or can be caused by illnesses such as stroke, brain tumours, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease and Cerebral Palsy. The brain controls our nervous system so any damage to it can lead to problems such as loss of movement, sensation, coordination, balance and memory, along with changes in behaviour and speech.
How does Neuro Physio work?
Our brain has the ability to form new connections during the process of neuroplasticity. This process is what allows us to learn a new skill through experience and practice.
Neuro physiotherapy works by understanding how the brain has been affected and how this relates to the physical symptoms experienced. Plasticity of the brain is promoted through specific exercises, repetition and re-training of normal movement patterns.
Where does this treatment take place?
This is a community based service offering one to one sessions in your own home. This allows rehabilitation to take place in a more meaningful environment and allows you to work on more specific, functional goals that matter to you. For example, working on transfers on and off your own sofa or bed or being able to get yourself to the toilet, accessing your garden, walking to the corner shop, making your own lunch. If needed treatment can also take place in your local gym, swimming pool or anywhere else that may be beneficial in your rehabilitation.
Treatment is bespoke to each individual and orientated around your goals. Durham reach also provides Physiotherapy to a local charity, NeuroActiveUK, based in Ouston, Chester le Street. This is a social hub, delivering exercise, physiotherapy, massage therapy, emotional and social support to people who have had a brain injury or stroke. People who attend the centre find they develop strong friendships with others going through similar difficulties and are able to provide support to each other. This is a good opportunity to help give you the confidence to get back out into the community and gain further confidence and independence while living with your condition/injury.
